Summary

The “Speak to Me in Numbers” curriculum addresses global issues, based on a dialogue between mathematical and science-based data. In this way, it introduces 9th graders to some of the sustainable development goals that face the world. The program addresses the global issues articulated in the UN called SDGs (Sustainable development goals). The SDGs include topics such as global warming (SDG 13), the spread of the corona pandemic that is part of the goold health and wellbeing (SDG 3) ; Life under the sea (SDG 14). Around these issues there is a data-based scientific and mathematics discourse. Each program module is based on a sustainable development challenge, in which students are presented with data in various mathematical representations as well as the scientific background. Students analyze the issue using high mathematical skills and come up with data-based solutions.
After drawing conclusions, the students suggest a way in which they can influence their environment while relying on the same data and they act accordingly. The program is designed for ninth graders who study in an excellence program; it is taught by math and science teachers.
We study the development of students’ argumentation skills and the attitudes towards the SDGs.

The program is funded by the Eddie and Julie Trump Foundation (Grant 317) as part of the Middle School Foundation’s goal to promote excellence.
