Summary

The project aims at promoting scientific literacy, mathematic literacy and the connection between the two. In this project, we develop teaching and learning materials, including interactive ones, for the ninth-grades’ excellence classes. Computational biomedicine is becoming central in the world of medicine. It is the application of mathematical modeling, based on big-data for the prediction of a patient’s medical status, early detection of diseases, new biological correlations and more. In this project, students will use mathematical modeling based on authentic data (from life science research) to explore health related phenomena – naturally, in a simplified way adapted to their abilities, skills and their previous content knowledge, coherent with the middle-school curricula and the PISA framework, both in science and mathematics.
The development and implementation will be accompanied by a research aimed at evaluating the efficacy of the program in promoting scientific and mathematical literacy, as well as characterizing the ways science teachers teach mathematics-oriented contents. This project is supported by the Trump Family Foundation.
