The PeTeL environment is at your service during the Covid-19 pandemic

Following the decision to shut down the schools, the Department of Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute of Science has been working towards opening distance learning classrooms in the PeTeL environment.

The distance learning classrooms enable teachers and their students to perform synchronous and asynchronous learning from their homes. The PeTeL environment provides study materials and interactive activities on subjects relevant to the current curricula, as well as immediate feedback on the activities. The teachers can track the performance of their students and offer their help according to the difficulties that arise.

Since the beginning of the distance learning period, over 450 physics, chemistry and biology teachers chose to make the PeTeL environment accessible to 12,000 of their students.

The PeTeL environment teams, comprised of experienced teachers, technology specialists and researchers, are working non-stop in order to mentor, support and enable this large group of teachers and students to use the PeTeL environment for distance learning.

What does the PeTeL environment provide for the teachers?

Arrangement and organization of the teaching sequence

Arrangement and organization of each teacher’s personal teaching sequence in a way that is convenient and accessible for their students.

Analysis based teaching

Diagnostic questions that were developed at the Department of Science Teaching are provided in an interactive version, which enables the analysis of the students’ previous knowledge and the construction of appropriate teaching sequences.

Interactive activities

Dozens of interactive activities and digital exercises developed based on the teachers’ websites and textbooks, which also provide automatic feedback, and enable teachers to track their students’ performance.

Submitting assignments

Assembled submission of lab reports and homework and the ability to easily and conveniently check them in the environment.

Teachers’ collaboration

Teachers from all over the country can share materials and teaching sequences, creating an online community of teachers.

A national collaborative database

The option to browse through a national database of activities, copy them to the personal environment and design a personalized learning experience for your students.

Student entry

Students can enter the PeTeL environment with a laptop computer or a smartphone using a mobile app, during class or at home.

About the PeTeL initiative

The PeTeL project for Personalized Teaching and Learning was developed by scientists from the Department of Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute of Science, software developers and experienced teachers from all over the country. The project was designed to promote the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in high schools in Israel, while creating a personalized experience according to the knowledge of each student at any point in time.

(PeTeL, Personalized Teaching and Learning),

WEIZMANN MAGAZINE VOL. 13,
