הורמון שנוצר על ידי תאי בתא (beta-cells) בלבלב ומופרש לדם.
\nהפרשתו מוגברת עם עליית ריכוז הפחמימות, חומצות אמינו, חומצות שומן וקטונים בדם.
\nשומר על רמה קבועה של גלוקוז בדם: כאשר ריכוז הסוכר עולה, האינסולין מגביר תהליך שבו חד-סוכרים הופכים לגליקוגן, ולהפך: כאשר ריכוז הסוכר בדם יורד, האינסולין מגביר תהליך פירוק של גליקוגן לחד-סוכרים.<\/p>\n
