AI for Blended-Learning: Empowering Teachers in Real Classrooms

Online Workshop, EC-TEL’21, September 20, 2021

Most of the research on personalized learning tends to focus on learning environments that are designed for the individual learner, such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that offer (mainly) academic level content, or Intelligent Tutoring Systems that teach core skills (e.g., K-6 Math). However, in K-12, most of the learning occurs in blended-learning environments, where teachers employ a variety of online and offline activities, combine individual and group work with frontal teaching, and other modalities. Thus, there is a sharp contrast between where most of the learning happens, and where most of AIED/EDM research is conducted. The COVID effect reinforced our understanding that online learning cannot substitute, but only complement, a human teacher.  This workshop will enable participants to share ideas, insights and tools regarding the use of artificial intelligence that supports and empowers teachers in providing personalized instruction in blended learning environments.

Topics addressed include, but are not limited to:

  • AI for Blended Learning
  • AIED and educational data-mining for teachers
  • Learning analytics tools and dashboards for teachers
  • Gamification and Crowd-sourcing
  • Human Factors involved in adoption of AI tools by
  • educational users

  • Time zone for the workshop is CET
  • The workshop will be held through ZOOM.
  • The conference will be held through Gather. Town. Here is the link. The password was sent to you by E-mail from the conference organizers. Inside the conference environment, follow the orange line to the left in order to get to ZOOM room #2. Once inside the room, press the "x" button on your keyboard, and you will be automatically transferred to our ZOOM meeting.

The workshop solicits original, unpublished proposals that present empirical research in these topics, as well as position papers and critical perspective contributions. Early stage research is welcome.

Type of submissions

Long/short papers (up to 6/10 pages). Please use the CEUR template.
Accepted papers will be published on CEUR Workshop Proceedings. We plan to invite highly innovative papers to participate in a journal special issue on the topic.
Submission link will be published HERE closer to the submission deadline.

Structure of the workshop

The workshop is expected to span half a day, with 2-3 sessions of presentations and discussions, followed by a round table and panel discussion.
