{"id":565,"date":"2016-10-31T15:25:43","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T13:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stwww1.weizmann.ac.il\/en\/?page_id=565"},"modified":"2021-07-21T10:15:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-21T07:15:19","slug":"material-sciences-chemistry-for-middle-school","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/stwww1.weizmann.ac.il\/en\/?page_id=565","title":{"rendered":"Material Sciences (Chemistry for Middle School)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Material Sciences (Chemistry for Middle School)<\/h2>\n<h2>Leading team<\/h2>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/pages\/search\/people?person_id=2382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Zahava Scherz<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/pages\/search\/people?person_id=2211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Bat Sheva Eylon<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Project members<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/pages\/search\/people?person_id=23435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Marcel Freillich<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Merav Kfir<\/li>\n<li>Hanna Margel<\/li>\n<li>Debby Somech<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/pages\/search\/people?person_id=4569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Malka Yayon<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<p>The Material Sciences for Middle School project started in 1994 and resulted in the development of a series of learning and teaching materials as part of the MATMON curriculum (1996-2002), and \u2013 beginning in 2010 \u2013 a new, revised curriculum series, titled MATMON HADASH (\u201cnew MATMON\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of this project, several developments were introduced:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The teaching sequence for the Material Sciences curriculum materials;<\/li>\n<li>Methods for developing a sound understanding of the \u201cgreat ideas\u201d in the field;<\/li>\n<li>Approaches which emphasize the material\u2019s relevance to the student, with the aim of achieving comprehensive scientific literacy for all students; and<\/li>\n<li>Research-based pedagogies which support meaningful learning and teaching: primarily the integration of contents and high order skills, student-based approaches, and applying IT and a variety of approaches to facilitate students\u2019 diversity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These developments were supplemented by further research on the subject, focusing on students\u2019 conceptualization of the structure of matter, using a longitudinal conceptual methodology which analyzed the challenges faced by students and their comprehension of the particulate model: from particles to atoms and molecules.
